Mettler Studios' Creative Dance Teacher Training provides a full-immersion experience of individual and group dance improvisation and strategies for teaching this material for all ages and abilities.  The work is based upon principles of dance developed by Barbara Mettler.

WORKSHOP STRUCTURE

Daily sessions M-F, 9:00 am - 4:30 pm with a two hour lunch break
Follow-up mentoring program by phone and email


CREDIT

PURPOSE
  • To cultivate the natural creative movement resources of individuals and groups
  • To study and practice movement as a medium of creative expression
  • To explore the use of the body as instrument and movement as the material of dance
  • To provide teachers with the necessary tools for teaching creative dance

WORKSHOP MATERIALS
    • Individual and group improvisation studies in the materials of dance, including themes such as:
      • the kinesthetic sense as a guide for discovering movement forms
      • force, time and space and their connections to drama, music, and visual arts
      • organic form, where movements and themes evolve naturally one from another
      • the unity of sound and movement
      • dance with the environment
      • building skills for group dance improvisation
    • Directed exercises
    • Discussion of principles of dance and how they apply to teaching
    • Materials and methods of teaching creative dance and improvisation on all levels
    • Adaptation of materials to specific teaching endeavors according to the interests of the workshop participants

WORKSHOP LEADERS

Mary Ann Brehm, PhD and Griff Goehring have taught workshops together since 2007. Both were members of Barbara Mettler’s professional groups and served as Mettler’s teaching assistant.
Mary Ann taught adult classes at the Tucson Creative Dance Center for 20 years, has worked extensively with children in school settings and been a faculty member in the Creative Arts and Learning Master’s Program at Lesley University. She is a past president of the International Association for Creative Dance and has a  PhD in dance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Griff has worked with  children and adults in educational, recreational and therapeutic settings since 1980. She is the founder and director of Green Mountain Creative Dance Center in Vermont and adjunct faculty at Hampshire College in Massachusetts. She is also a past  president of the International Association for Creative Dance.

HOUSING
 

  • The Holiday Inn Express--Tucson Mall is a little over 2 miles from the Tucson Creative Dance Center.  I has been newly renovated and features two queen or a king bed in suites with a kitchenette. There is a pool an whirlpool and complementary breakfast.  There is a bus stop with a bus that goes near to the Studio close to the entrance.  We have arranged for a very reasonable group rate with the hotel.

    Reservations should be made not online. The telephone number is 520-202-5000.  The code to use for registrants of the workshop is MET.  The block of rooms is being held for us until June 13. Please contact us if you make a reservation, so that we know who is staying at the Holiday Inn.

    We can help workshop participants find suite-mates to share expenses. You may want to contact us before making a reservation.
  • Housing subsidies are available for participants who plan to use the workshop material in their work. Contact Mary Ann at mabdance@aol.com or 814-677-3661 for the requirements for this subsidy. 
TRANSPORTATION
People flying into Tucson International Airport can take the Arizona Stagecoach, Tucson Airport Shuttle to the hotel or any address in Tucson.    Taxi service is also available at the airport.  The Holiday Inn Express-Tucson Mall is about 25-30 minutes drive from the airport.

The Route 6  city bus (Sun Tran) goes northbound from the airport to a bus stop right across the street from the Holiday Inn on Wetmore Ave.  This trip takes approximately one hour. On Sundays the bus leaves only once per hour at either 13 or 19 minutes past the hour.  One way fare is $1.50.  Exact  change is needed.

During the workshop the Route 34 bus can be taken between the Holiday Inn and the Tucson Creative Dance Center.  This trip takes about 10 minutes.
